Summer School New Plymouth
The New Plymouth Classical Guitar Society proposes a guitar summer school from 16-21 January 2012 – a fun, intense, rewarding 6 days of graded ensembles, lectures, workshops, masterclasses, recitals and concerts. The summer school will offer superb learning and performance opportunities to all amateur guitarists, school and tertiary music students, professional teachers wishing to improve their skills and meet other professional teachers and performers, observers interested in music and guitar. The course however will not be suitable for complete beginners. The artist-faculty, which consists of world-class concert artists and teachers, will draw amateur players and talented students from across New Zealand. Area concertgoers will also be able to hear these gifted musicians perform in recital during the course. The tutors/performers include John Couch (Course Director), Miles Jackson (incl. Guitar Competition
The Lions Clubs International Global Youth Music Competition is a unique cultural event that allows young musicians to showcase their talents and encourages the youth of today to appreciate the ideals of Lionism. The inaugural contest final was held in Sydney on 30 June 2010, when the instrument was the Violin. In 2011 the competition instrument is the Classical Guitar.
Who Is Eligible to Enter the Competition? The 2011 competition is open to classical guitarists who are less than 25 years of age (born after December 31, 1986).
Participants will play one required piece and two additional pieces of their choice selected from the list provided. Participants should have lived in the constitutional area they represent (Constitutional Area 7 comprises New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste & Indonesia) for at least five years.
How Does The Competition Work? Participants must record the performances of their choices from the repertoire lists and either submit these on video or DVD to the address below or post on YouTube before 31 January 2011 (URLs to be included on the entry form). In the case of entries posted on YouTube a copy of the entry form must be received by 4 February 2011.
The Local winner will receive NZ$1,200, second place NZ$500, and third place $300. The Global first place prize is US$10,000; second place is US$7,000; and third place is US$3,000.
How Will the Global Winners Be Selected? All local first prize winners will perform during the Lions Clubs International Convention 2011 in Seattle, Washington, USA. The performance will have two parts: Individual Performances: Finalists will perform the required piece and their first selected piece. Concert: Finalists will perform their second selected piece at a concert that is open to the public.
